Four ways to cross the same dunes, and they suit very different people. We run buggies, so treat this as a biased but honest comparison — we will tell you when one of the others is the better choice.
You drive, which is the whole point. Automatic, no gears, no licence, 25 kilometres of desert inside an hour, and you can stop wherever the view is good.
Best for: couples, small groups, anyone who wants to reach the quiet side of the erg and still be back for dinner.
A two-seat side-by-side with a roll cage and seatbelts. More stable and more comfortable than a buggy on rough ground, and easier if you are nervous. It is also heavier, so it needs firmer lines through the soft sand, and it costs more.
Best for: people who want to drive but do not like the idea of straddling a machine.
Silent, slow, and the reason the postcard exists. A typical trek covers 3 kilometres in about 90 minutes and takes you to a camp inside the first line of dunes — not into the deep erg.
Best for: the classic photo, an overnight in a desert camp, and anyone who wants the desert without an engine. If you have time for both, ride a camel to your camp and take a buggy the next morning.
The right answer for distance, heat and mixed ability. A Land Cruiser will take you to Khamlia, Mifis, the dry lake and the fossil beds in a morning with air conditioning, and it is the only option for grandparents, toddlers or anyone who should not be exposed to sun for two hours.
Best for: families of mixed ages, hot summer days, and sightseeing rather than riding.
